What Is General Liability Insurance & What Does It Cover?

Our photographer and videographer liability insurance bundles five types of protection into one coverage that defends your business from costly risks.

General Liability

General liability protects against medical injuries and property damage that may happen during your photoshoots or video sessions.

For example, your tripod may fall and injure a model’s foot, or your softbox scuffs a studio floor. Without this coverage, you could look at hundreds or thousands of dollars in bills you’d have to pay out of pocket.

Personal and Advertising Injury

This coverage protects you from claims regarding personal or reputational damage. Lawsuits alone can cost you thousands or hundreds of thousands. Personal and advertising injury can cover libel, slander, invasion of privacy, and similar claims.

For example, a competitor claims your social media ads caused them to lose customers and files a lawsuit. Or you used photos of a subject in your marketing materials without their permission.

Products - Completed Operations

This coverage protects you from claims where your products didn’t meet the customer’s expectations.

For example, a wedding couple asks you to make digital and printed photos of their special day. When you deliver the final products, they’re unhappy with the pictures. They say several photos have printing defects that make them blurry, and they sue you.

Damage to Premises Rented to You (Any One Premises)

Damage to premises rented to you protects you from paying out of pocket for property damage you may cause to a rented facility, such as a studio or office building.

For instance, you may have lit scented candles in your studio while editing your photos. You leave to get your order from the DoorDash driver at the front door. While you’re gone, one candle suddenly falls over and starts a small fire.

Medical Expense Limit (Any One Person)

General liability protects you from injuries you or your business causes.

The medical expense limit in your general liability coverage offers $5,000 for physical injury medical bills if someone gets hurt on your property or because of your photo or video sessions. This “emergency” fund covers you even if you’re not legally at fault for the injury.

General Liability Insurance Explained

Is General Liability Insurance Required for Photographers?

General liability insurance is not a legal requirement for photographers or videographers, but most event planners and studios require it before hiring you. Here are business perks that come with liability insurance:

  • Sets your business apart from competitors: Insurance is your seal of approval — it’s documentation that shows clients, venue owners, and event organizers you’re prepared if something goes wrong.
  • Protects you from paying pricey claims: Property damage, medical expenses, and personal and advertising injury lawsuits can drain your business. General liability protects your passion so you can keep capturing moments.
  • Defends against the unexpected: One of your studio lights falls over and crushes your subject’s foot, putting them out of work for two months and you in a $20,000 lawsuit. Liability insurance gives you absolute peace of mind so your dream career doesn’t become a blurred memory.

Data Breach (Cyber Liability)
(Optional With Annual Plans Only)

Data breach insurance can cover the cost of claims that arise from a cybersecurity breach. If you collect or store client info or photos online, take payments over the internet, or send sensitive data over email, we highly recommend adding this coverage to your policy.

Failure to Deliver (Professional Liability)
(Optional With Annual Plans Only)

Failure to Deliver, aka professional liability or errors and omissions (E&O), can cover the cost of claims that arise from mistakes, like if your memory card fails and your client’s photos are lost, an unexpected illness prevents you from being able to shoot an event, or you inadvertently give poor or incomplete advice as part of a demo.

Additional Insureds

When you add a person, event, or organization to your policy as an additional insured, they receive protection if they are named in a suit due to a covered business-related loss/claim because of your actions or operations.

Additional insured status cannot be granted to a friend or co-worker as an extension of your policy. Each individual must purchase their own policy to obtain liability coverage.

A written contract, such as a venue, studio rental, or employment contract is required to add another party as additional insured.

General Liability

General liability insurance can cover the cost of third-party bodily injury and property damage claims, like if a client trips on your business equipment and injures themselves, or you accidentally damage furnishings or flooring at a venue. It also protects against the cost of copyright infringement claims, personal and advertising injury claims, and more.

Damage To Rented Premises

This coverage can protect your business from the cost of claims arising from damages done to rented spaces, like a studio or event booth. It’s common for property owners and event organizers to require businesses to list them as additional insureds on a policy before renting a space. Full Frame provides unlimited additional insureds for just $30.

Camera Equipment (Inland Marine)
(Optional With Annual Plans Only)

Also known as inland marine, camera equipment insurance can cover the cost of repairing or replacing damaged or stolen business equipment (camera bodies, lenses, lighting equipment, and more). Our policy can protect against claims that occur at home, on a job, and anywhere in between. Full Frame offers multiple coverage options for equipment insurance based on your business needs.
